Nick Kyrgios once again attracted attention for all the wrong reasons during his match at the 2015 Rogers Cup. His insults directed at his opponent Stan Wawrinka generated considerable controversy.
During the second round tie, an on-court microphone picked up Kyrgios saying “Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend. Sorry to tell you that mate.”
The microphones again picked up Kyrgios saying that Wawrinka, who was 30, was “banging 18-year-olds”. It was after the match that Wawrinka’s relationship with then 19-year-old Donna Vekić became public.
Kyrgios later apologized for his remarks on Facebook, saying,
“I would like to take this opportunity to apologize for the comments I made during the match last night vs Stan Wawrinka. My comments were made in the heat of the moment and were unacceptable on many levels. In addition to the private apology I’ve made, I would like to make a public apology as well. I take full responsibility for my actions and regret what happened.”
Kokkinakis, in response to the controversy, said that Kyrgios was wrong to drag him into his on-court issues. He then said that he cleared the air with Wawrinka and Donna Vekic.
